| O comportamento de vacas leiteiras pode ser influenciado pela natureza do tratamento que recebem dos humanos. Neste trabalho foram comparados 20 estabelecimentos de agricultores familiares que usavam terapia convencional (n=11) ou homeopática (n=9) como principal terapêutica em rebanhos leiteiros. Foram feitas entrevistas com os agricultores, medidas de comportamento humano (como nomear e falar com os animais, contatos positivos ou negativos, condução para a sala de ordenha), e de comportamento animal. Foram encontrados escores de comportamento humano similares entre os dois grupos. A média de distância de fuga foi menor nos rebanhos sob uso de homeopatia do que no convencional (P=0,04). | Turtles (Testudines) form a monophyletic group with a highly distinctive body plan. The taxonomy and phylogeny of turtles are still under discussion, at least for some clades. Whereas in most previous studies, only a few species or genera were considered, we here use an extensive compilation of DNA sequences from nuclear and mitochondrial genes for more than two thirds of the total number of turtle species to infer a large phylogeny for this taxon. Our results enable us to discuss previous hypotheses on species phylogeny or taxonomy. We are thus able to discriminate between competing hypotheses and to suggest taxonomical modifications. | In sexually reproducing organisms, primordial germ cells (PGCs) give rise to the cells of the germ line, the gametes. In many animals, PGCs are set apart from somatic cells early during embryogenesis. This study explores the origin of primordial germ cells (PGCs) of the zebra fish and examines their morphology during early development (1st day-15th day). PGCs were selectively stained by the alkaline phosphatase histochemical reaction and viewed by light and electron microscopy from the time they are first detectable in the yolk sac endoderm. | PH domains (pleckstrin homology) are well known to bind membrane phosphoinositides with different specificities and direct PH domain-containing proteins to discrete subcellular apartments with assistances of alternative binding partners. PH domain-containing proteins are found to be involved in a wide range of cellular events, including signalling, cytoskeleton rearrangement and vesicular trafficking. | Plant yield and resistance to drought are directly related to the efficiency of the xylem hydraulic conductance and the ability of this system to avoid interrupting the flow of water. In this paper we described in detail the assembling of an apparatus proposed by TYREE et al. (2002), and its calibration, as well as low cost adaptations that make the equipment accessible for everyone working in this research area. The apparatus allows measuring the conductance in parts of roots or shoots (root ramifications or branches), or in the whole system, in the case of small plants or seedlings. | This paper shows that general trust in the organic label as well as perceived positive health effects of eating organic products have positive causal effects on actual organic consumption. The data used is panel data for 830 households reporting actual purchases together with responding to a comprehensive concerning questionnaire attitudes in 2002 and 2007. The paper also shows that perceived positive environmental effects and perceived better animal welfare related to organic production have no significant effect on actual behaviour, whereas concern for artificial additives and low price sensitivity increases the organic budget share. | Heterotrophic bacteria are key players in the biogeochemical cycle of iron (Fe) in the ocean, but the capability of different bacterial groups to access this micronutrient is ignored thus far. The aim of our study was to develop a protocol for the combined application of microautoradiography (MICRO) and catalyzed reporter depositionfluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH) using the radioisotope 55Fe. Among the different washing solutions tested, Ti-citrate-EDTA was the most efficient for the removal of extracellular 55Fe providing sufficiently low background values. | Changes in paleoclimate and paleoproductivity patterns have been identified by analysing, in conjunction with other available proxy data, the coccolithophore assemblages from core MD03-2699, located in the Portuguese margin in the time interval from the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 13/14 boundary to MIS 9 (535 to 300 ka). During the Mid-Brunhes event, the assemblages associated with the eccentricity minima are characterised by higher nannoplankton accumulation rate (NAR) values and by the blooming of the opportunistic genus Gephyrocapsa.
